Tiger Team: tt-mathematica

Mathematica Integration

Following a user request from Ulm in March 2014, a Tiger Team was established to investigate license management issues with respect to the commercial Mathematica software package from Wolfram Research. The underlying problem was that every university has its own Mathematica license agreement. To this end, two related problems had to be solved. First, the legal implications needed to be clarified: The Tiger Team issued a formal request to Wolfram Research, asking whether users were allowed to use Mathematica on the bwUniCluster in Karlsruhe using the license from their home university. Second, a technical solution had to be devised to separate the different license pools: Mathematica users on the bwUniCluster should only get licenses from their corresponding university license pools. In Mai 2014, the final solution had been worked out. According to Wolfram Research, it is covered by the license agreement. In principle, the solution is applicable to all bwForClusters. For usage of the Mathematica software package, see the bwHPC Best Practices Repository.
