Hippocampal activity in mice
The tigerteam has been established to support a group of neuroscientists to analyze electrophysiological and imaging data from the hippocampi of mice. The electrophysiological data includes recordings of single or multiple nerve cells. Additionally, cellular calcium current of large popululations of neurons are monitored using imaging techniques. These methods create large amounts of data which used to be analyzed using Windows workstations. However, the analysis methods employed are well suited for parallelization using an HPC system, thereby enabling a scaling of the research activities that would not be possible even with powerful single workstations. These include spectral analysis methods (Fourrier transformations, wavelet analysis, digital filter), correlation methods (cross and autocorrelations) and procedures for dimension reduction (e.g main component analysis, cluster methods). The tiger team activities involve the identification of tasks that can me migrated from the single workstation to the HPC system, supplying and setting up the required software and finding suitable strategies to handle analysis of the large data sets.
