Tiger Team: tt-matlab

Matlab Integration

The Tiger Team "Matlab Integration" was established in October 2013 after a Matlab workshop in Freiburg. Attendees were scientists from various fields working with Matlab, experts from MathWorks and members of the bwHPC-C5 competence centers. The workshop raised several complex questions that could not be answered right away and needed a joint effort with a longer perspective.

In the course of the Tiger Team "Matlab Integration", three main problems were addressed. The first problem was a cross licensing issue which was settled by an agreement between MathWorks and the state of Baden-Württemberg. Next, there was the technical issue of Matlab implicitly using all available cores on a cluster node. This invalidated the shared usage model used on the bwUniCluster. A workaround was found and is now documented in the Best Practices Repository of the bwHPC-C5 project. The last problem addressed the concerns of users who prefer the Matlab graphical user interface over the Unix command line. A perspective solution is the usage of the Matlab Distributed Computing Server (MDCS), which is included with a limited number of workers (max 32 cores) in the state wide license. This allows scientists to submit jobs to the clusters from the Matlab installation on their local desktop. After a series of tests with pilot users, this solution was made available to the bwUniCluster users. The documentation is available on the bwHPC Best Practices Repository. Further developments be pursued by a follow-up Tiger Team.
